Every place has a hidden palette.
Gradienta is the studio of artist Alex Kirk. Every artwork starts as a photograph of a real place. Every colour in it is read and set in order as bands of pure colour, printed on canvas and sent straight to you.
The method
From a real place to pure colour
Most artworks are named after the place they came from. Here is Vernazza, on the Italian coast, in three steps.
A photograph of a real location. The sky is lifted out, leaving the scene below it.
Every colour in the scene is read and set in order. Five lead the palette.
The bands take the place of the sky. This one is Vernazza, Luminous Echoes No. 006.
Every colour in a place, set in order, reads as one calm field. Lots of detail, a quiet result.
The colours rise as bands
The sky is lifted out, leaving the scene below it. Then the scene's own colours rise as bands where the sky was.

With a background in psychology and computer science, Alex approaches each piece as an experiment in how we see colour.
The world provides the palette: coastlines, mountains and cities. The code puts their colours in order.
