Gradienta for the press

Gradienta is the studio of artist Alex Kirk, founded in Margate, Kent, in 2025. Every artwork begins as a photograph of a real place: a harbour in Japan, a canyon in California, a city at night. The sky is lifted out, leaving the scene below it. Every colour in the scene is read and set in order, and five lead the palette. The colours rise as bands where the sky was, so each canvas holds the colours of one place in a single calm field.

There are 101 artworks so far, from Kobe Harbour and İstanbul to Grimes Canyon and the Matterhorn, in stretched, framed and float-framed canvas. Each is printed to order on 400gsm artist-grade canvas.

Alex has a background in psychology and computer science, and approaches each piece as an experiment in how we see colour.

With a background in psychology and computer science, Alex approaches each piece as an experiment in how we see colour.

The world provides the palette: coastlines, mountains and cities. The code puts their colours in order.

“An invitation to engage with colour not as an external object, but as a conversation between light and the nervous system.”
